GALESBURG — Carl Sandburg College’s first art show of the 2022-23 academic year will feature the work of Douglas C. Johnson from Aug. 29-Oct. 17 in the Lonnie Eugene Stewart Art Gallery.
An opening reception for Johnson’s exhibition, “Hinterlands,” will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in the gallery located in Building D on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd. Both the show and reception are free and open to the public.
A descendant of early settlers in the Illinois towns of Rankin, Odell and Henry, Johnson spent his youth detasseling, walking bean fields and visiting family in Nebraska, where his grandfathers were farmers. His creations often feature rural landscapes and scenes of small Midwestern towns.
A central Illinois native, Johnson has been featured in Chicago at the Peter Miller Gallery, the Addington Gallery and the Chicago International Art Exhibition. His pieces are also included in many private collections. Johnson earned his bachelor’s from Illinois State University and a Master of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University.
Established in 2006 and named for area artist Lonnie Eugene Stewart in 2015, the Lonnie Eugene Stewart Art Gallery has hosted group faculty exhibits, juried student exhibits and the works of area professional artists.
